Abi didn’t look back until she was inside the building. Half a minute later, she collapsed against a wall and tried to catch her breath.

‘Gosh! You were brave,’ Sasha puffed beside her. ‘That horrible Craig boy was miles bigger than you!’

Abi didn’t feel brave. Now that the danger was past, her legs felt all weak and trembling. The scratches on her hands and arms were stinging like crazy too.

‘When did you let that kitten go?’ asked Sasha.

‘What?’ Abi realized that Flame must have made himself invisible. That meant he was feeling back to his old self. ‘Oh, he jumped down back there in the field,’ she said quickly. ‘I bet he lives somewhere close. He’ll find his way back. I’m just going up to the room. I want to wash these scratches.’

Sasha decided she was hungry and went off to beg some sandwiches from Cook. ‘I’ll bring some up to the room for you.’

‘OK. Thanks. And could you ask her for some milk, please?’ Abi began climbing the stairs.

In her room, Abi sat on her bed with Flame in her lap. He snuggled up close. ‘You saved me, Abi. Thank you. But are you hurt?’ he mewed with concern.

Abi looked at the deep scratches on her hands. She shrugged. ‘It doesn’t matter.’

Flame reached out a paw and touched her very gently. Tiny silver sparks, like Christmas glitter, sprinkled her hands and arms. Abi felt them grow warm. The pain faded. Where the scratches had been there were now just faint marks.

‘Thank you, Flame,’ she said. ‘I nearly died with fright when I saw you up that tree!’

She bent her head and Flame touched her chin with the tip of his cold black nose. A warm glow settled in Abi’s heart. She realized how fond she was of the magic kitten. It made her sad to think that one day he may have to leave.
